Information Systems
The SI research group, created in 1975 by Robert Reix, is managed by Isabelle BOURDON and Philippe COHARD.
The Information Systems (IS) research group was set up in Montpellier in 1975 by Robert Reix, one of the founders of the discipline in France. The group's initial roots were in the CRIG (Centre de Recherche en Informatique et Gestion), which brought together computer scientists and managers from the Faculty of Science. The group then developed at Montpellier 2 University within Crego (1982,) then Cregor (2008). Then, in 2011, the research group became MRM-Systèmes d'Information, bringing together researchers from Montpellier universities and other partner institutions. The information systems research group at the University of Montpellier has a long history in the IS community.
RESEARCH TOPICS
The Information Systems research group analyzes problems and provides theoretical conceptualization. The issues dealt with in information systems management are linked to the design, implementation, evaluation and use of information systems and related information technologies. These are studied in a variety of fields, including industry, services and consulting, healthcare, banking and education. This activity revolves around three main themes inherent to the discipline:
- Ecology of Information Technologies: Green IT, CSR, Sustainable Development (SD), e-health, Degrowth, IT security, Protection of individuals with regard to the use and ownership of individual digital data, etc. The originality of our work on these research themes is based on the SI group's understanding of ethics, which is characterized threefold: concern for the other (as opposed to only concern for the self), concern for elsewhere (as opposed to only concern for repercussions here) and concern for later (as opposed to only concern for now). A vision of ethics that de facto encompasses SD and CSR issues, but considerably broadens them.
- Innovation through Information Technology: IS Strategy and Governance, IS Project Management, Open Innovation, Industry 4.0, etc. Our work here differs from classic Innovation-Performance issues, by specializing in understanding the innovative organizational forms emerging in certain Internet-related collectives: polycentric governance, motivation and participation in Open Source collectives, power in communities of practice, IT contributions to the supply chain, social media and value creation, etc. We hypothesize that these innovative forms foreshadow a new form of governance in organizations.
- Effects of Information Technology in the organization: IT use and appropriation, digital transformation, Knowledge Management, The originality of research in the field of IT appropriation lies in the fact that it favors empirical studies of organizational practices (particularly in public or private companies) over mere discourse on the expected benefits of IT. These studies also favor qualitative methods. IT use is analyzed in relation to managerial practices and organizational characteristics (such as organizational culture or sector of activity). For example, we examine resistance to ERP implementation, or situations where the tool is not appropriated.
Whether it's a question of digitizing, implementing and managing connected objects, Big Data, CRM or ERP, information technologies are merely the supports for Information Systems with their own socio-technical complexity. The spread of information technologies into the various fields of management does not dissolve but, on the contrary, reinforces the need for scientific research into information systems in order to produce actionable knowledge about their management.
